Driven to Distraction Book Review

Driven to Distraction Book Review

Driven to Distraction
remains on of the best selling books on ADD of all time, and with good reason. It is an easy and enjoyable read and explains ADD in laymans terms.

It covers Attention Deficit Disorder In Children, Adult ADD, ADD in couples, the impact of Attention Deficit Disorder on all family members, the different types of ADD, Diagnosis and treatment of ADD.

This is a wonderful and useful book on the topic of ADD and is perfect for someone who suspects that he/she or a loved one may suffer from ADD. It is filled with interesting case studies that are as interesting to read as they are useful. Both authors have ADD so they write from a very compassionate viewpoint.

The only weak point about the book is that it doesn't provide much in the way of practical coping strategies and treatment options. So if you already have a positive diagnosis of ADD and are looking for practical help and coping strategies give this book a miss.

Your money will be better spent on something that can help you to take charge of your/your loved one's ADD instead of Driven to Distraction.

5 Tips for Healing ADD from Daniel G. Amen

5 Tips for Healing ADD from Daniel G. Amen

1. Eliminate anything that is toxic to your brain. Toxic substances can cause/aggravate ADD-like symptoms.

2. Stop Smoking. Besides all the other obvious risks to your health, it reduces oxygen flow to the brain....never a good idea when you have ADD.

3. Cut coffee out of your diet. It also reduces oxygen flow to the brain.

4. Eat a high protein, low-carb diet.

5. Engage in 30-45 minutes of intense aerobic exercise. This increases the blood flow to the brain, releases seratonin (which promotes a feeling of calm) for 30-45 minutes a week.

Healing ADD By Daniel G. Amen - A whole and balanced approach to treating attention deficit disorder (ADD)

Healing ADD By Daniel G. Amen - A whole and balanced approach to treating attention deficit disorder (ADD)

"Most people in America have their ADD treated with medication alone. However, research studies by Dr. James Satterfield of Oregon show that medication by itself does not make a lasting difference. To get the best results, patients need interventions in a number of areas. ADD patients need strategies geared toward enhancing brain function
and improving their skills at home, work and in society at large."

Healing ADD By Daniel G. Amen

Healing ADD By Daniel G. Amen

Healing ADD by Daniel G. Amen was one of the first books I read on Attention Deficit Disorder. Over the years I have read over 150 books on Attention Deficit Disorder in kids but Healing ADD still remains one of my firm favorites.

Healing ADD is a comprehensive book that covers almost all aspects of Attention Deficit Disorder from the causes of ADD, Treatment options for ADD & ADHD, living and coping with the frustrating behviour of an ADD ADHD child or spouse and more.

Daniel Amen begins with the premise that there are 6 types of ADD and then explains each one in depth along with case studies. Treatement options are then discussed for each of the types -no one size fits all.

What was very useful was the Amen Clinic ADD Questionnaire that is used in the famous Amen Clinics - You can evaluate your child, your spouse or yourself and see what type of ADD or ADHD you have.

Parenting strategies, school and sleep strategies and more are all discussed in detail.

The section I loved the most was 'Games ADD People Play' in which Dr. Amen explains the root behind an ADD person's frustrating and annoying behavior. It was almost if he was describing my husband and son perfectly.

I was shocked to learn that my reactions were reinforcing this bad behavior and delighted to learn what I could do instead. So if a loved ones nutty behavior is driving you up the wall, this is one book you HAVE TO READ.

The book is both easy to read and understand and contains some very helpful information.

If you or a loved one suffers from ADD, or you suspect that they do, this book is required reading.
